Beautiful Defined

Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’s speech on Beauty left an entire audience speechless. It left me awed and impelled to share it. I posted a link on my FaceBook page and I copied a couple paragraphs here to whet your appetite.

” I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: “Dear Lupita,” it reads, “I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.”

My heart bled a little when I read those words. I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me…”

To watch Lupita and hear the rest of her speech, click on the link below. If that doesn’t work, please find the posting on my FB page. Believe me, it is worth the time and effort to hear this delightful acceptance speech. She delivered it accepting an award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the seventh annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.

Sisters

Sisters

We Are Sisters

God made us sisters.
Life made us friends.
It’s been a life-long journey
To bring the months that
Separated us,
The personalities that
Distinquished us,
Into a Medley of Appreciation.
Seventeen months apart,
A life-time of differences,
But an eternity together –
Because, Praise God,
We are Sisters.

One-of-a-Kind Gem

One-of-a-Kind Gem

If I measure me against me,

I could be six foot three.

If I measure me against YOU,

I’m not even two foot two!

So, who do I use?

What feet do I choose?

Who carries my blues?

Who walks in my shoes?

“No one,” You say?

God took His soft clay

And molded a shape –

Unique! Full of play!

God gifted your soul

Full of treasure untold.

Then He threw out the mold.

You’re more precious than gold.

Who do I measure myself against then?

Do I look at my friends, compare me with them?

“No one,” God smiles.  “I’ll say it again,

You’re a unique,  one-of-a-kind gem!”

I Know Something Good About You

Wouldn’t this old world be better
If the folks we meet would say,
“I know something good about you,”
And then treat us just that way?

Wouldn’t it be fine and dandy
If each handclasp warm and true
Carried with it this assurance,
“I know something good about you”?

Wouldn’t life be lots more happy
If the good that’s in us all
Were the only thing about us
That folks bothered to recall?

Wouldn’t life be so much better
If we praised the good we see?
For there’s such a lot of goodness
In the worst of you and me.

Wouldn’t it be wise to practice
That fine way of thinking, too?
You know something good about me.
I know something good about you!

COMMENTER / COMMENTATOR AWARD

GinaV at Professions for PEACE practices that way of thinking. She not only thinks, “I know something good about you,” but she takes the time to express it. When she sees others doing the same, she praises it with her affirmations and her nominations. Thank you, Gina, for nominating my blog for the Commenter Award. I am grateful to her for introducing me to so many thoughtful and inspiring bloggers. She does this by reposting blogs that touch her heart, and by acknowledging others through the blogging awards nominations. It is a beautiful blogosphere out there, a big and beautiful world of writers with ideas to share. I thank you all for sharing your time and thoughts. Like Gina, I love to offer comments and insights, both on my own blog as well as in replies or comments on others. In accepting this award, I will continue the “love circle” by passing on the links to some lovely people who also warmly encourage others. My nominees will be posted as an addendum to this soon. Meantime, you are here – reading this – and you may recognize that poem as one of those from my mom’s 1936 collection. More treasures to come!

I want to know something good about YOU, my blogging friend. Write a comment! And – have a beautiful day. God Bless You!

What is your favorite animal?
~ TazE, my Boston Terrier, is my favorite animal right now. Bob & I have had Boston Terriers most of our married life. They are such fun!! But, we have antelope who come into our yard regularly, and deer and bunnies. I do love wildlife!

What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink?
~I am with Gina on this one = Cool water. So necessary – and so good for me.

~Facebook. It helps me stay connected to my daughter in Switzerland and her three teen sons. Also, it connects me to beloved family in other states and to dear, dear former students and colleagues.

What’s your passion?
~Sharing the love of God through service to others, making a difference in others’ lives, and being honest and genuine while living a life of integrity – those are my passions.

What’s your favorite pattern?
~Plaids

Do you prefer giving or getting presents?
~I always prefer giving, but I’d never turn down a present! I love finding just the right thing for someone and giving it “just because” instead of waiting for a birthday or Christmas.

What’s your favorite number?
~My favorite number is seven (7). It symbolizes completeness. I have seven grandchildren. My birthday is in the 7th month. My phone number and mailbox number both end in 77. Our house number is 7.We are living in our “Last Best Place.”

Favorite day of the week?
~Sunday – the Lord’s Day – the day He said something like, “It is complete. Rest!” It is the day my husband and I go to see our extended family in the church and worship our Maker and thank Him for all our many blessings and express our appreciation for the many answered prayers.

Favorite flower?
~A single red rose cut from the bush and delivered with a smile from my sweetheart … a stem of orchids on a plant from my friend, a plant that reproduces every year in greater abundance than the year before… the first daffodils in springtime… I could go on and on… I love flowers!

There, I have answered the questions and fulfilled the requirements of the award. Thank you for reading, dear bloggers… and thank you for visiting those nominated sunshine spots. You’ll be glad you did!
